100% Design Shanghai 2008: Commocean [06 Jul 2008|11:07am]

Making a commotion…with technology:

Lighten up, people! That seemed to be the message at Commocean, the high-end product division of Brit designer Richard Hinton’s 14-year-old giftware company. “Funny/funky” is how he describes his whimsical mood lighting, which included a surreal umbrella-shaped “fixture” and a table lamp bedecked with the Pudong skyline. I grilled Richard about the challenges of designing for the Chinese market: “There’s so much copying here,” he sighs. “That’s why I’m targeting commissions like hotels, rather than the retail market; you put a product in a store, and it immediately gets copied.” (He mentioned a notorious Shanghai thoroughfare called something like “Copy Light Street” where vendors unapologetically knock off others’ designs.) So how does he stay outwit the competition? “We change our product over quite fast, and rely heavily on technology—which takes longer to copy.” At the show, for instance, Commocean unveiled a proprietary metal-coating system, Lux, which can be applied to any material, from carved-wood picture frames to MDF—the substrate of this giant gold-bar bench.

Looking For Digital Painting Tutorials [05 Jul 2008|10:38pm]

I didn't see anything in the community tags and hopefully this is on-topic enough.

I'm looking for tutorials for digital matte painting using Photoshop.  If anyone could recommend some sites, that'd be really great.

Thanks!

internship? [05 Jul 2008|10:10pm]

[loudxmouse]
Is it pretty on pointe of me to assume that "internship" means "unpaid"? I am looking at AIGAdesignjobs.org and up comes a very interesting job, listed as an internship but under job level it says "jr staff" rather than "internship" so it makes me wonder if it is a paid internship.
would it be super gauche of me to email and ask about pay?

the job on aiga is here
and the listing from their website is here

100% Design Shanghai 2008: Going for the gold [05 Jul 2008|07:48pm]
mocoloco

yutaka_yanagisawa_owas_chair.jpg

Going for the gold:

Although this is technically the first installment of 100 % Design Shanghai, the show organizers hosted a preview exhibition last year to kick things off; Japanese product design firm SO inc. was among the featured attractions. The company returned this year with a pint-sized booth tented entirely in gold fabric to set off a pair of glittery chairs by Yutaka Yanagisawa of OWAS. Although the designer used gold to efface the chair’s form—“causing a distraction in peoples’ minds…to erase the image of a shape”—the strong geometries are a large part of their wacky appeal. Although I expected the O-shaped seater to be pretty on the eyes but punishing on my lower back, it was actually quite comfortable!

Week-in-a-minute: 80% Design Shanghai [04 Jul 2008|08:59pm]
mocoloco

This week we were almost 100% Design Shanghai. Jen Renzi's daily diary ventured beyond the show to get a glimpse of pre-Olympics Shanghai as well as what we expect will someday be a major design center. How so? China's 400 design schools are churning out 10,000 grads a year, China manufactures almost everything and China has thousands of years of art and culture to draw inspiration from. More to come. The highlights:

+ The bamboo garden: designer scaffolding
+ The press conference, where the show came to life
+ Richard Hutten's green house
+ The show's It Bag
+ A tour of the Bridge 8 complex
+ Party on the Bund, no explanations necessary
+ Book launch on the Bund, despite the rain
+ The launch was all about the three P's; panels, politics, and practicing architecture in Shanghai
+ A pow-wow with the creative directors...
+ ... and a panel discussion on Branding China

But it wasn't ALL about Shanghai this week:

+ London presents New Designers 2008
+ Uli Rapp's Charm Necklace made a statement from the Netherlands
+ Fresh MoCo featured work from Italy, Mexico and Poland
+ Mag Reviews: nico, Wallpaper* and FRAME
+ This Week from Tokyo: Plus Minus Zero's new collection and pens by Naoto Fukasawa
+ Wooden angles from Martin Sprouse
+ This Week at Art MoCo - Valerie Green catches people in the act ... of shopping
+ and new work from Eastvold Custom, Christopher Yue and Asssaf Israel - reclaimed timber, hanging up the mess and tidy juicing

vintage postcards, and shoes [05 Jul 2008|06:37pm]

[miss_october]
I sort of collect vintage (reproduction) postcard and cards, and I finally got around to framing some of them. (Still haven't hung them up yet, though.)

-Halloween
-Mermaids
-Ladies/Faeries
(I need two more for this one, I don't have any others that 'go' yet.)

And, I got these hand-painted moccasins at a thrift store awhile back. I thought they kind of fit this community in a way!

Employment and portfolio help for a rookie [05 Jul 2008|11:38pm]

graphicdesign

[eremos]
In three weeks, I'll graduate from film school with a BFA in Film Directing. For a variety of reasons, I'm also considering a career in graphic arts and design. Unfortunately, I have no experience or formal training in this field aside from some basic high school art classes. However, I am an experienced photographer, filmmaker, and cinema production designer, and I have a firm grasp of aesthetics, composition, color, and other visual essentials plus an uncompromising attention to detail. I am also a typophile, and have spent time and expense learning about type theory and practice, as well as assembling a considerable collection of typefaces.

Questions )

In conclusion, I love design, I know a lot of basics and I love type, but I am really as inexperienced as they come. I'd greatly appreciate any help or advice you can give me.

Thanks.
